How to Use This Pack

The Kindergarten unit test on subtraction within 10. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different pictures and numbers, for a retake or a child who was away. Each form has 10 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the moon. 8 elephants drink at the lake." The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review, to a small group at a table, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Questions 9 and 10 (subtracting on a number path and subtraction facts to 10) are taught in Kindergarten in some states only: leave them out and score out of 8 if your class does not learn them. Questions 7 and 8 are a few facts each: give the point when all are right, or score them by the fact if you like. Question 6 is an adding story on purpose, to see who listens for "more come" before choosing the sign. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Read each question aloud and let your child act out the story with small toys or fingers.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by crossing out, drawing dots, circling a sign or writing one number
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then read the story
  • On question 5, a child may draw the dots in any order: count them with the child
  • Watch for children who count the crossed out pictures too
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed
