Five pages on the words first to fifth. Every row is a line of five animals with a front: a finish line, a slide or a bus, and the animal nearest the front is first. On page 1 students circle, put an X on, color or draw a box around the animal in the place the sentence names. On page 2 they cut out ten place ribbons, 1st to 5th, and glue each one under its racer in two races. On page 3 an arrow points at one racer and students circle its place word. On page 4 they cut out ten animals and glue them in line for a slide and for a bus, using the clue row under each line. Page 5 mixes the fronts: some lines face left, some face right, so students find the front first and count from there. Pages 1, 3 and 5 start with a worked example.
Line up five students at the door and ask who is first. Turn the line around to face the other door and ask again: the first is now at the other end. Then hand out the page and ask students to put a finger on the finish line, the slide or the bus before they count. Use the ribbons on page 2 as a quick check: 1st should always sit next to the front.
Line up five stuffed animals for a race across the floor and give out places as they finish. Ask "Who came in third?" and "What place is the bear?" Then turn the line to face the other way and ask again.
