Five pages that turn the usual task around: students write the stories. Page 1 gives an adding number sentence (34 + 25 = □) and students write a story that matches it, then solve it. Page 2 does the same with subtraction, including a compare story. Page 3 gives a bar model with its numbers and a ?, and the story has to fit the model. Page 4 gives the start of a story and asks for the question, one of them a two-step story. On page 5 students write three stories of their own: more come, compare two groups, and two steps. The answer keys print a sample story for each; any story that fits the numbers is right.
Write one number sentence on the board and collect three different stories for it from the class. Talk about what makes each fit: the numbers, what happens, and a question at the end. Page 5 works well with partners, who trade stories and solve each other's.
Give your child a number sentence like 40 − 15 and ask for a story about something at home. Then you write one and let your child solve it.
