About Veterans Day

Veterans Day, on November 11, honors everyone who has served in the United States armed forces. These pages keep the focus on the flag, parades, and thank-you cards, so they suit a classroom celebration or a lesson about saying thank you.

How to Use This Pack

Five pages built around the flag and a Veterans Day parade. Page 1 counts the flag's 13 stripes and 50 stars, page 2 turns star arrays into rows and addition, page 3 skip counts stars by 5s and 10s, page 4 graphs the pictures in a parade, and page 5 has five word problems about thank-you cards and the parade.

In the Classroom

Show a real flag before page 1 and let students predict how many stripes and stars it has. Page 5 pairs well with making real thank-you cards for veterans in your community.

At Home

Look for flags on your street or in a parade and count their stripes together. Talk about someone in your family or neighborhood who has served, and make a card for them.

Tips for Success

  • On page 1, the rows of stars take turns: 6, then 5, then 6
  • Touch each star as you count by 5s
  • Color one graph box for each picture, from the bottom up
  • Underline the numbers in each word problem before solving
