Five pages about right angles, the square corners all around us. Page 1 starts with a worked example: the corner of a card fits an angle exactly, so it is a right angle. Then students check twelve angles, turned every which way, and circle Yes or No. Page 2 shows how the corner checker works on an angle that is smaller than a right angle, a right angle and an angle that is larger, then students circle smaller or larger for twelve angles. On page 3 students mark each right angle in eight shapes with a small square and write how many there are. Page 4 marks one angle in twelve pictures, from a book and a pizza slice to a clock at 3:00 and a ladder, and students write R, S or L. Page 5 sorts ten lettered angles into a table and asks students to draw an angle smaller than a right angle, a right angle and a larger one on dot paper.
Give every student an index card or a sticky note to use as a corner checker before page 1, and practice on the corners of a desk, a book and a window. Remind students to put the corner on the point of the angle and one edge along one side. For page 4, go on a right-angle hunt around the room first and make a class list of what you find.
Make a corner checker by folding any piece of paper in half and in half again, then hunt for right angles at home: a door, a picture frame, a tile, a cereal box. Look at a clock at 3:00 and at 9:00, when the hands make a right angle, and at other times when they do not.
