Five pages on perimeter, the distance all the way around a shape. Page 1 puts shapes on grid paper so students count unit lengths around the edge. Page 2 adds the labelled sides of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. Page 3 shows only two sides of each rectangle (and one side of each square), so students use equal opposite sides. Page 4 gives the perimeter and asks for the missing side. Page 5 has six word problems about fences, frames, and walking around a park.
Walk the edge of a rug or a table with your finger before page 1 and count steps or hand spans: that is the perimeter. Page 4 is a good warm-up for algebra thinking, since students work backward from the total.
Measure the sides of a book, a placemat, or a picture frame with a ruler and add them up together. Ask how much ribbon it would take to go all the way around.
