How to Use This Pack

The Kindergarten unit test on numbers to 5. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different pictures and numbers, for a retake or a child who was away. Each form has 8 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Count the turtles." The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review, to a small group at a table, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Question 8 (dice and five frames: seeing small amounts without counting) is taught in Kindergarten in some states only: leave it out and score out of 7 if your class does not learn it. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Read each question aloud and let your child point and count out loud.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing one number or drawing a line
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Watch for children who count one picture twice in a scattered group
  • A child who writes a number backwards still knows the amount: note it and keep going
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.1 Say the numbers in order up to 100, counting by 1s and also by 10s.
  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
