How to Use This Pack

The Kindergarten unit test on number pairs and making 10. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different pictures and numbers, for a retake or a child who was away. Each form has 10 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. How many more dots make 5?" The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review, to a small group at a table, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Question 10 (the equal sign: circle the one that is the same as 3 + 2) is a Kindergarten lesson in Florida only: leave it out and score out of 9 if your class does not learn it. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Read each question aloud and let your child count on fingers or with small things like buttons or cereal.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing one number or drawing dots
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Ten fingers make a good ten frame: hold up 7 and count the fingers that are down
  • For a number sentence, point to each box as you read: in all, then each group
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.2 Solve story problems and add or subtract with totals up to 10, modeling them with objects or drawings.
  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • K.OA.A.4 For a number from 1 to 9, find the partner that adds with it to 10, and show it in a picture or number sentence.
  • 1.OA.D.7 Know the equal sign means both sides have the same value, and decide whether addition and subtraction equations hold true.
