Five pages of elapsed time in whole hours and half hours, the 2nd grade step before minutes. Page 1 shows a start clock and an end clock on the hour: count the hours between. Page 2 gives a start clock and how much later, like 2 hours or 30 minutes: draw the hands on the end clock and write the end time. On page 3 each problem sits on a time line marked every half hour; students hop by hours, then a half hour, and write the hours and minutes. Page 4 is a field day schedule: how long is each event, and which is the longest and the shortest. Page 5 has six time stories that ask for an end time or how long.
Turn the minute hand of a teaching clock all the way round and ask how much time went by: one hour. Then turn it halfway: 30 minutes. Before page 3, draw a time line on the board and hop from 2:00 to 4:30 together, one hour, one hour, then a half hour.
When you start something with a clear end, like a trip to the park or a movie, note the start time together. At the end, ask how long it took: count the hours on the clock, then the half hour.
