Five pages of calendar problems. Page 1 is a March calendar with school events (a book fair, a field trip, an art show) and six questions, such as when permission slips are due 3 days before the field trip. Page 2 is April with its holidays: Adam has to leave 5 days after Easter, so what day and date is that? Page 3 counts days forward and back with no calendar, using a two-week strip of days, including counts longer than a week. Page 4 sets June and July side by side for problems that cross from one month into the next, and page 5 finds holidays that move from year to year: Mother's Day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving.
Model one problem from page 1 with the class calendar: put a finger on the field trip and count back 3 squares. On page 3, show that 7 days later is always the same day of the week, so 10 days later is 3 days after that. Ask students to write their own problem about the school calendar for a partner.
Use a family calendar to count down to the next birthday or holiday. Ask your child what day of the week it will be, and how many weeks and days away it is.
