Five pages of repeating animal patterns. Page 1 is AB patterns: owl, frog, owl, frog, and so on, with three animals to circle from for the empty box. Page 2 has longer cores, AAB, ABB and AABB, and page 3 has three animals in each core (ABC). On page 4 students cut out five animal cards and glue the right one into each pattern; one card is extra. Page 5 makes patterns out of size alone: the same animal, big and small.
Build a pattern with students first: stand, sit, stand, sit, or clap, pat, clap, pat. Read each row aloud together as a chant, so students can hear the part that repeats before they choose. Page 4 makes a good center with scissors and glue sticks.
Make patterns with toys, socks or snacks (cracker, grape, cracker, grape) and ask what comes next. Then let your child make one for you to finish.
