Five crosswords of addition and subtraction equations. Each equation fills five boxes, like 13 − 5 = 8, and runs across or down. Where two equations cross they share a number box, so the number written there has to work in both. Every equation has one or two empty boxes: start with one that has a single empty box, then use its answer in the equation that crosses it. Page 1 opens with a worked example, and the later pages have more equations that wait on a crossing answer. The empty boxes can be any number in an equation, so students find sums, differences and missing numbers like 15 − __ = 9. Every number is within 20, and there is exactly one way to fill each puzzle.
Work the example on page 1 together and point at the shared box: the 5 belongs to both equations. For the harder pages, ask students to mark the equation they solved first, then follow the chain from box to box. A missing number in a subtraction equation, like 15 − __ = 9, is a good one to talk through: think 9 + __ = 15.
Ask your child to read each finished equation aloud, across and down, to check that it is true. If they get stuck, cover all but one equation and ask what number would make it true.
