Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the order of the test
  • Find the regular polygons, and count sides, right angles and pairs of parallel sides on dot paper
  • Name triangles by their sides and angles, and give every name that fits a rhombus and a parallelogram
  • The properties a shape gets from its group, always, sometimes or never, and groups inside groups
  • The last four questions (measuring and sorting angles, the angles of a triangle, circles) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on classifying shapes and angles, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other shapes and numbers; where the second shape to name on the test is a trapezoid, the review names a parallelogram, and its circle question draws a radius. Questions 1 to 8 are the Common Core lessons, and questions 9 to 12 are for the states that teach them. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. The review uses Animal Math's definition of a trapezoid, a quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides, so a rhombus and a parallelogram are trapezoids too; the keys say so. Questions 9 to 12 are taught in 5th grade in some states only: leave out the ones your class does not learn. Students need a protractor for question 9. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to read the marks on each shape aloud before naming it.

Tips for Success

  • Read the marks aloud before naming a shape
  • Ask "is it always true, or only for some of them?"
  • Line up the protractor's center with the vertex
  • Add the two angles you know, then take the sum from 180
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.C.5a Know an angle's size is the share of a circle (centered at its vertex) between its rays; one degree is 1/360 of a full turn.
  • 4.MD.C.5b Know that an angle made of some number of one-degree turns measures that many degrees, so 50 one-degree turns make 50°.
  • 4.MD.C.6 Use a protractor to find the size of an angle to the nearest whole degree, and draw angles of a given size.
  • 4.MD.C.7 Know that angle measures add up when an angle is split into parts, and find unknown angles in diagrams by adding or subtracting, using equations.
  • 4.G.A.1 Draw and find points, lines, line segments, rays, right, acute and obtuse angles, and parallel and perpendicular lines, including in flat shapes.
  • 4.G.A.2 Sort flat shapes by whether they have parallel or perpendicular lines or angles of a certain size, and recognize right triangles as a group.
  • 5.G.B.3 Know that a shape in a smaller group has every feature of the larger group: squares are rhombuses, so all squares have four equal sides.
  • 5.G.B.4 Sort flat shapes into a hierarchy by their properties, such as polygons, quadrilaterals, parallelograms, rectangles and squares.

5th Grade Shapes and Angles Unit Review

5th Grade

A review of the unit on classifying shapes and angles, to go over together the day before the test. Students sort polygons, name triangles and quadrilaterals from their marks, work with the quadrilateral hierarchy, measure and sort angles, and find the angles of a triangle and the parts of a circle.
