Features

  • Both forms ask the same questions with different shapes
  • Count the sides and angles of a shape and circle every quadrilateral
  • Draw a shape from clues on dot paper and name it
  • Count the faces, edges and vertices of a solid
  • Name a shaded third, cut a rectangle into fourths, and find the squares cut into halves, which can be different shapes
  • The last six questions (right angles, sixths and eighths, comparing unit fractions, lines of symmetry, perimeter and area) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Count the sides and angles of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons
  • Draw a shape from clues and name it
  • Count the faces, edges and vertices of a solid
  • Halves, thirds and fourths; equal shares can be different shapes
  • Right angles in a shape
  • Sixths and eighths; compare unit fractions
  • Lines of symmetry
  • Perimeter, and area from unit squares

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on shapes and equal shares. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different shapes, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 13 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1 to 7 are the Common Core part of the unit (question 7 opens the second page). Questions 8 to 13 are taught in 2nd grade in some states only (right angles, sixths and eighths, comparing unit fractions, symmetry, perimeter and area): give the ones your class learns and score out of what you give. Halves, thirds and fourths are named in words; only the fraction questions for the states that teach them write numbers like 1/6. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to count the sides of a shape aloud, touching each one, and to show you how two halves of a square can be different shapes.

Tips for Success

  • Have students mark each side as they count it, so none is counted twice
  • A quadrilateral is any shape with 4 sides, not only a square or a rectangle
  • Keep a box or a block out for counting faces, edges and vertices
  • Equal shares are the same size, even when they are not the same shape
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.G.A.1 Draw and spot shapes with given features, like a number of angles or faces, and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
  • 2.G.A.3 Cut circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal parts called halves, thirds or fourths; equal parts of one whole can look different.
  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 3.MD.C.5a Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6 Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 3.MD.D.8 Solve perimeter problems for polygons: add side lengths, find a missing side, and compare rectangles with equal perimeters but different areas, or the reverse.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.

2nd Grade Shapes and Equal Shares Test

The unit test on shapes and equal shares, in two forms. Students count sides and angles, draw shapes from clues, count a solid's faces, edges and vertices, and name halves, thirds and fourths.
