Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Find 10 more, 10 less, 100 more and 100 less, and add and subtract hundreds and tens
  • Add with base-ten blocks and trade, add by partial sums, and add in columns
  • Subtract with blocks by breaking a ten or a hundred, and break apart the number taken away
  • Subtract in columns (across a zero too)
  • Find who is right and show how they know
  • The last two questions (solving a story problem within 1,000 and writing a story for a number sentence) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

How to Use This Pack

The unit test for the unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 6 and 8 are three column problems each: give the point when all three are right, or score them by the problem if you like. Questions 11 and 12 (solving a story problem and writing a story for a number sentence) are taught in 2nd grade in some states: leave them out if your class does not learn them and score out of 10. The answer keys name each question's skill, write every carried 1 and traded digit, and cross out the blocks, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to say what they did in each place: did the ones make a new ten, or did they need to trade a ten for 10 ones?

Tips for Success

  • Go over the unit review the day before the test
  • Ask "do the ones make a new ten?" before every column problem
  • Have students check a subtraction by adding the answer back
  • On Who is right, ask what mistake the other animal made
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Find the sum of two, three or four two-digit numbers using place value and properties of addition.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Tell why an adding or subtracting method gives the right answer, reasoning from place value and number properties.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
