Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Count sides and corners, circle every triangle among look-alikes, and draw a shape from clues on dot paper
  • Count square corners, decide which solid shapes roll and stack, and count the blocks in a build
  • Find the two shapes that make a bigger one
  • Find equal shares, and cut shapes into halves and fourths
  • See that more shares make smaller shares, and solve a sharing story
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Count the sides and corners of flat shapes
  • Tell a triangle from shapes that only look like one
  • Draw a shape from clues; count square corners
  • Solid shapes that roll and stack; count the blocks in a build
  • Put two flat shapes together to make a bigger one
  • Tell equal shares from shares that are not equal
  • Cut shapes into halves and fourths (quarters)
  • More equal shares make smaller shares; sharing stories

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on shapes and equal shares, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other shapes, so nothing on the review is on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, with pattern blocks and a few solid blocks out. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. When students cut a shape into halves or fourths, any way that makes equal shares is right, not only the one the key shows. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each question aloud with your child, and look for shapes around the house: the corners of a book, a can that rolls, a sandwich cut in half.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • A triangle is closed and has 3 straight sides, whatever its size, color or turn
  • The corner of an index card makes a good square corner checker
  • Equal shares are the same size, even when they are not the same shape
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.G.A.1 Separate the features that define a shape (three sides) from ones that do not (color, size, turn), and build or draw shapes with them.
  • 1.G.A.2 Combine flat shapes (such as trapezoids and half-circles) or solids (such as cubes and cones) into a new shape, then build more shapes from it.
  • 1.G.A.3 Split circles and rectangles into 2 or 4 equal parts, name them halves, fourths or quarters, and see that more parts means smaller parts.
